Lily Diephouse is one of our youngest team members, but despite being under the legal drinking age, Lily has developed an extensive knowledge of the Doffo wine portfolio in her role as tasting room cashier. We caught up with Lily to find out more about her background and what she hopes to accomplish here at Doffo Winery. We hope you enjoy getting to know her, and next time you visit the winery be sure to say hello!
Describe what it is like to work in the wine industry and how you came to work at Doffo.
It is very interesting, to say the least, to be a teenager working in the wine industry. Most of my friends work at fast-food restaurants and pizza places, and whenever anyone asks where I work they are always in awe that I work here. I started this job right when I turned sixteen and now I know quite a bit about wine, even though I’m not old enough to drink it. It is a great job and I love working here. I came to work here because of a connection through a family friend.
What is it like to work with the Doffo Family?
It is honestly the best experience to work with this family. It is like a family of my own, they are all so understanding and are great faces to see when we have an early morning meeting or are just coming in for a busy Saturday. It has been great getting to know all of them. I was an extremely quiet person when I started working here and Damian would always come up to me and say hi every single morning and that is when I really felt I belonged. So I appreciate everyone in the family and enjoy working with them.
What is your favorite part of what you do at Doffo?
My favorite part about being a cashier is selling wine. It is much harder for cashiers to sell because we cannot give customers tastings, but when they walk in the tasting room ready to buy and already know what they want it makes me extremely happy to be able to sell them a reserve or even a case. I also love all of the friends I have made while at Doffo. I appreciate all of them and honestly love all of them.
Are you currently in school? Are you studying anything wine-related? What are your career goals?
I am currently a senior in high school. I think this is the best high school job to have because only working weekends has helped me keep up with my schoolwork and keep my 4.2 GPA all throughout high school. I am not studying anything wine-related at the moment. I am looking to study communications and criminal justice and hope to become a communications liaison for the FBI.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I am on the varsity dance team at my high school and have been a competitive dancer for 14 years. I love to read and listen to music. And my favorite thing to do is go to the beach with my friends.
