Wine bottles dipped in wax sure look good on the shelf, but can sometimes be tricky to open. Fear not! Watch Damian as he demonstrates how to open these bottles with relative ease using nothing more than a two-stage waiter’s corkscrew.
It all starts with the corkscrew. Damian prefers his high quality two-stage corkscrew because of the larger foil knife and ability to work with larger bottles and corks, like the magnum of Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon pictured in the video. We sell these online and in the Doffo Tasting Room, so if you’re in the market for a good quality opener that will last you a long time and never let you down, stop by and pick one up!
Step 1: Cut the wax
Damian shows how to hold the foil knife at an angle and rotating the bottle as he cuts just the corner of the wax. Once you’ve made your way around the top of the bottle, the remaining wax on top of the cork may come off easily. Don’t forget to close the blade before continuing!
Step 2: Insert the corkscrew
If the wax is stuck to the top of the cork, you can insert the corkscrew straight into the piece of wax, driving it through the wax and into the cork. It’s often easier to rotate the bottle while holding the corkscrew in place, rather than trying to twist the corkscrew.
Step 3: Pull the cork
Now you’re ready to uncork the bottle! Use the two stages to pull the cork, and get ready to pour and enjoy your wine! Whether you are simply opening a bottle to enjoy with dinner, or hosting a Wine Tasting at Home, this technique will make the process easy so you can enjoy your wine!
