You may be asking yourself–What is Polenta? Polenta is a dish, not an ingredient, from northern Italy. It’s often referred to as a porridge or mash made from coarsely ground cornmeal, as corn was cultivated in Europe in the 16th century. In the past it has been made with chestnuts, millet, spelt or even chickpeas. Our polenta is made from the traditional yellow corn.
Back in Italy, when our great grandparents would have family gatherings around the holidays, polenta was the easiest food to serve to a large amount of people. Everyone would gather around a long wooden table, which was cleaned and sanded down smooth. The polenta was then poured on top of the table, making it simple and fun for the entire family to share. In the early 90’s our family decided to keep this tradition alive, by celebrating Christmas Eve with a polenta party. We soon decided it was time to share this tradition with our wine club members. As the success of the winery has grown over the years, so has the popularity of our polenta parties, each year selling out faster than the last.
Aside from the usual festivities, this event is an opportunity for us at Doffo Winery to give back to our community. This year we have partnered with Project T.O.U.C.H. in Temecula. This local charity works to overcome homelessness and establish effective methods of homeless prevention. They provide a transitional housing program and emergency winter shelters along with other direct emergency assistance, and community food programs. We will be accepting donations in various forms to help them in their fight against homelessness.
For us here at Doffo Winery, the holidays are about family, friends and sharing the spirit of the holidays with those who are less fortunate. So come enjoy good food, great company and of course, fantastic wine!
Tickets for this year’s December 3rd Polenta Party are on sale now. Hurry up though, they’re almost sold out! This event is limited to wine club members and there is a limit of 4 tickets per membership. We hope you’ll join us this year as our Polenta a la Table tradition continues. Ciao!
